Large Removal Boxes Buyers Guide

Large removal boxes are the most cost effective way to move your household items from one place to another.

Eeco-friendly, lightweight and store flat when not in use, are just a few of their many advantages.

How do we know what we need to fulfil all our requirements?

In this article we’ll go over several factors you may not have considered about large removal boxes, to help make your move a success.

What To Consider Before Buying

Construction type

Do you want a box you need to use tape to hold together or would  you prefer it to be held together by its own folding slots. In short, the main advantage of a taped box construction is that it will be able to hold more weight. Simply put it will be more reliable, especially if you’ve loaded it with heavy items.

The bottoms of folded construction boxes can fall out, giving way to the weight of the heavy items inside.

Whether you need to load lighter weight or heavier items will influence your buying decision. You’ll need a few other items to put the boxes together if they’re the taped type. If you don’t want to bother with tape, knives or scissors, then a folding construction type is preferable as long as your items are light enough.

Strength Rating

An important and obvious part of the buying decision, is making sure that the large removal box is strong enough to hold what you intend to load within it. In addition, making sure they’re strong enough to stack on one another is key.

The ECT rating stands for edge crush testing and is the corrugated cardboards industries standard test of stacking strength.

The number is amount of pressure that the box withstands before failing and ultimately being crushed by the weight.

ECT 44, 48. are just a few of the common ratings. These values are the lbs of force the box can withstand. This is sometimes shown as a # designation number, for example 200# for an ECT 32 rated corrugated box.

We can conclude that a higher ECT rating means in general that the box has a higher maximum weight limit.

An example of this is a box that has passed for ECT 48 would have a 100lbs weight limit.

Size & Shape

Anything you want to move needs to fit properly within the dimensions of the box. The items you intend to package decides the size and shape of box you’ll need. For the most part, a regular cubed shaped box is ideal for the majority of items.

However specialised items such as widescreen TVs and other wide and flat shaped items required boxes with more specialized shapes.

Ensure you take some measurements before buying. You’ll also need leave room at the outer edges of the removal box where you’ll need padded protection to protect the contents of the box and stop excess movement.

The takeaway from this is that the box shouldn’t be too big, too small or the wrong shape. Otherwise your items could potentially be damaged by the excess movement within the box, or by not having enough room inside the removal box to be padded properly within the box.

Handles

Large removal boxes are easier to move when handles are present. These are usually cut outs in the sidewalls of the box that give you extra leverage and comfort when transporting them by hand. Handles become more important the heavier and the bigger the box is. Large removal boxes without handles can be potentially dangerous to carry around, and this hazard only increases with more weight.

While not required in many cases, if you you you have to hand carry these boxes any type of distance you’ll be glad the boxes have handles. Carrying from handle cut outs in the sidewalls allows you to maintain a good posture and gives you better awareness of your surrounds as the large removal box won’t impair your field of vision to the same extent.

Special Requirements

Do you have any glassware to move or expensive suits or dresses you don’t want creased? How about expensive dinnerware of some value that you’d like to keep unharmed?

There are several specialized boxes that fulfil these requirements. Crockery and glassware removal boxes contain cardboard dividers within the box to hold these fragile items in place.

These type of boxes can be used to protect your bottles of wine and other items that have the potential to shatter on impact.

Again it’s important that you buy the appropriately sized box here for the items you need to move. Wrong sized box equals excess movement inside the removal box, which is the most likely way your items will become damaged during your move.

Using extra padding inside these types of boxes such as paper padding is a cost effective way to take extra precaution giving you more peace of mind.

Eco-friendliness

Lastly the materials used are important to many conscious buyers. Large removal boxes are often single use items by many. As such you would want them to be manufactured from a sustainable source. Thankfully most large removal boxes are manufactured from cardboard. Whether this is sustainably sourced or not will depend on the manufacturer themselves. Taking extra care to research who you are buying from will help reinforce sustainable manufacturing. Be sure to recycle your cardboard boxes when finished using them! Otherwise fold them away neatly are reuse again whenever the time comes.
